6 ways to get more ecological wardrobe

Clothing industry is one of the most controversial topic, when it comes to climate change and polluting. The biggest environmental damage is caused by so called ”fast fashion”. Clothes are no longer manufactured to last, but to be used few times and the to be forgotten. As much as 10% of the worlds carbon dioxide emissions is due to clothing industry. This is more that emissions from air- and water traffic altogether.

How does my sweater pollute?

From the very first moment a piece of clothing is born it pollutes. It pollutes when its fibers are manufactured, when it is transported, washed and it pollutes even when it is thrown away.

Clothing industry needs cultivation of cotton and this makes it a resource feasting beast. Making one cotton shirt takes 2700 liters of water. To our oceans clothing industry leaks microplastics in amounts that are overwhelming. And let´s not forget the chemical use, transporting, washing and burning of remaining fast fashion.

How to start gathering more ecological wardrobe

It all begins with this one question: why do I buy fast fashion? We are victims of our own rush, quick life means quick decisions and quick decisions make us buy fast, and this gives us a burst to dopamine, a hormone that makes us feel all good and tickly. We can get hooked on these doses of this sweet hormone and buying starts to feel necessary. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that the long-lasting happiness comes elsewhere.
Other reason could be, that when you don´t quite know how you want to dress, you start to buy one piece there and another elsewhere. In result of this, you have a shattered wardrobe and a need to buy even more to make it function in any level. The thread is ready. But what and how we should then buy?!

1. Forget trends, put all your effort to style (yours) and to quality

One advice I have is this; think what is your favorite outfit. It can be anything, your favorites tell a lot about you. When you have this outfit figured out and clear in your head, start to buy items that match with these clothes. This way, after a while you do have well-functioning, matching wardrobe that mirrors your core style. Don´t be hasty, this may take a little time, before you are ready with it.

Gathering your very own wardrobe that is made just for you and no one else, also releases money to items that have better quality. When the purpose is to assemble a long-lasting wardrobe, and quality is in high value, the buying of fast fashion that is quickly worn down just become senseless.

I want an professionals opinion aboout thois so I ask small Tampere located clothing store INCH”s second owner Anu Johansson. She knows about her materials. As I ask her about materials that are long-lasting she immediately names the natural fibers: cotton, wool, silk and linen. ”If one decides to go with man-made fibers, there are many labels that manufacture clothes from recycled materials” she adds. This will ”close the chain” as the once used items get new life.

2. Buy only perfection

This means the pieces of clothes that give your soul a little sparkly pulse. Don´t buy ”nice” stuff, be ruthless with this; only perfect is good enough for you.

3. USE the clothes you buy

The third point on our journey towards more ecological wardrobe is this. USE the stuff you buy. When you choose quality items that somehow represent you, you will want to use those as long as you can. This part is easy as long as you are already following steps 1 and 2. Other part of step is; if you don´t use it, give it to someone who will. Maybe your buying "err" could be someone elses belowed new garment.

4. Be a lazy washer

Now we have left the fast fashion behind us and the next thing is the maintenance of clothes. It has been pointed out, that we wash our clothes too often. And this is very bad for our environment. Anu from INCH” has an opinion on this, she says ”It is a fact, that when taking care of clothes you can go a long way with just local stain removing and ventilation. And when clothes actually need to be washed, they can be washed in very low temperature with ecological washing liquid.”

Here´s a tip! Take advantage of your old bamboo toothbrush to get rid of small stains in clothes.

5. Choose your priority

Ecological living is a hot topic and it has many different angles. Instead of trying to adapt the whole concept of green living in one day, why not take small steps. Your very own new core style in your mind, decide your priority. Do you want your clothing to be domestic, or do you value certain, resistant materials? Do you need to know that manufactures of your clothes have proper working environment or do you want to buy ALL your clothes recycled? Be a slave of your own value and actively infect your friends with it.

6. Don’t buy clothes on credit

Never buy clothes on credit. Ever. (If not absolutely necessary) Different credit options make us blind not only to the products we buy, but also to the amount of money we ‘accidentally’ spend. If you are a fast fashion consumer I dare you that you easily use significantly more money when buying cheap and often, than you would, if you were to buy quality items judiciously.
Other choices
When you have dug up your core style beneath all the piles of fast fashion, you can start to question your other choices. Maybe next you can attack your bathroom. Consider taking bamboo toothbrush, bamboo swabs and bamboo dental floss in use. This could be the next step.
